The decline in the self esteem of teenage girls over the past seven years is a distressing revelation, highlighting the pressing need for intervention. This alarming trend, closely tied to the rise of social media and the economic downturn, has seen a significant drop in the number of 14 and 15-year-old girls who feel highly confident in their self worth. While the early 1990s saw consistent year-on-year increases in self esteem among young people, this positive trajectory abruptly changed after 2007. The data, presented by the Schools Health Education Unit, is concerning, with a decline from 41% of girls reporting high self-esteem in 2007 to a mere 33% in recent years.
